Gauhati High Court stays buffalo fighting. The interim order was passed by the court based on a petition filed by PETA. The court again directed the district administrations to take measures so that buffalo fights are not held in Assam.
The court also directed the Assam government to submit a report on action taken in the case. Orders have been issued to submit a report before February 6.
It is to be noted that keeping the tradition, the Assamese people have been organizing buffalo fights, bulbuli bird fights, cockfights, etc. during bhogali bihu. But in the last several years, the fight has been stalled due to legal intervention.
These fights, which have been going on in Assam since the days of the Ahom swargdevas, were banned by the court through an order. In 2014, the court, in a ruling, had banned such fights as cruelty to animals.
An important decision in this regard was taken in a recent cabinet meeting of the Government of Assam. Under which buffalo fighting was allowed in Assam. On the basis of this, buffalo fights were held in Assam during MaghBihu this afternoon. But the Gauhati High Court has ordered an end to the buffalo fight again.
