The Uttarakhand Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill (UCC). It was followed by Uttarakhand becoming the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The Uttarakhand Assembly on Wednesday resumed discussions on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami suggested that other states should follow the same law.

This is not an ordinary bill India is a huge country but our state has got an opportunity to create history and show direction to the entire country. The dream that the framers of the Constitution was going to come true and will become a reality. Other states of the country should also move in this direction. We are going to create history.

Opposition Congress members again proposed to refer the act to the select committee of the House The opposition MLAs said they were not opposed to the bill even though its provisions need to be examined in detail so that its shortcomings could be removed before it is passed.

Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Bhuvan Chandra Kapi said the proposed bill violates the privacy of young adults to register live-in relationships and inform parents of live-in partners below 21 years of age. He added that there were many of its provisions such as compulsory registration of marriages, prohibition of child marriage and minimum marriageable age and there was nothing new about it.

“The panel, which took 20 months to draft the UCC, appears to have only cut, copied and pasted laws that are already in existence.” Luxar MLA Shahzad alleged that the UCC Bill curtailed the religious rights of Muslims. He also said that the right to equal inheritance rights of sons and daughters on the property of parents would lead to an increase in female foeticide.
