It is good to mention here that a total of 174 lakh people in Assam belong to Islam. About 32 per cent of assam’s population is mentioned in the papers as Islam.
In 1901, the number of Christians in Assam was 638 in 13 thousand. As of 1941, the number in Assam was 37,000. But since 1951, the number of Christians in Assam has increased at a higher rate.
In the 10 years between 1941 and 1951, the number of people converting to Christianity increased in Assam by nearly 300 per cent. In 1951, the number of people who converted to Christianity in Assam reached 1,60,438.
Since then, the number of Christians in Assam has steadily increased. At present, the number of Christians in Assam is 11,65,867. Karbi Anglong district has the highest number of Christians in Assam. The district, with a population of 9.5 lakh, has a christian population of 1.6 lakh.
The dominance of Christianity in some of the northeastern states is noteworthy. The number of Christians in Meghalaya is 22.13 lakh. Christians make up 74.59 per cent of the total Zang population in the state. The total population in Meghalaya is 29.67 lakh.
In Manipur, 41.29 per cent of the total population is Christian. In a country with a population of 28.56 lakh, 11.79 lakh people are Christians. About 9.56 lakh people in Mizoram are Christians. In Mizoram, which has a total population of 10.97 lakh, 87.16 per cent of the population is Christian.
Christianity also has a special influence in Arunachal Pradesh. In the hill state with a population of 13.84 lakh, 4.19 lakh people are Christians. A total of 19.04 per cent of the population in the state is Christian. It would not be wrong to say that most of the people of Nagaland are Christians. In Nagaland, with a population of 19.79 lakh, 17.40 lakh or 87.93 per cent are Christians.
There are relatively few Christians in Sikkim. In the state with a population of just 6.11 lakh, 60,000 people, or 9.91 per cent, are Christians. The number of Christians in Tripura is 4.35 per cent. In Tripura, 1.60 lakh people are Christians.
One thing is clear that the voters of this Christian religion play a special role in the Lok Sabha seats of the North East. While the BJP is trying to cross the 24th Lok Sabha elections with Hindu politics, there could be discrepancies in this equation in the Northeast.
Because in states like Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, it is foolish to expect victory without christian votes. Therefore, if any party in the North-East wants to hoist the flag of victory, it is virtually impossible to win if the voters of Christianity are sidelined.
