90 percent of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros at Kaziranga. Hence the national park is also known as Rhinoland in the tourist field. There are a total of 35 mammals, 42 types of fish and 500 types of birds in Kaziranga.

History of Kaziranga

According to history, Mary Curzon, wife of the then Viceroy of India Lord Curzon, came to visit Kaziranga in 1904. But he could not see the rhinos in Kaziranga. It was then that Mary took a pledge to conserve the rhinoceros.

At mary’s efforts and at the initiative of Lord Curzon the process of conserving rhinos began in Kaziranga. For that, on June 1, 1905, the proposal for a reserve forest to Kaziranga was adopted. Kaziranga was declared a reserve forest in 1908 and banned from hunting animals. The number of rhinos at that time was only 12.

Kaziranga was subsequently declared as the game sanctuay on November 10, 1916. But the term Mrigaya(Hunting) was renamed as Kaziranga Sanctuary in 1950 by the then Chief Conservator of Forest P D Starccy as it was rooted in the legality of hunting.

Kaziranga became a national park on January 1, 1974. Kaziranga was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 for the biodiversity of Kaziranga.

As per the data for the year 2019-20, the land area of Kaziranga is 858.98 sq km. As per 2018 data, the number of rhinos is more than 2413. Along with the rhinoceros, bears, Howler monkey, wild boars, pythons, various tigers, elephants etc.
