Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the virtual Sela Tunnel project from Itanagar.
The Sela tunnel has been constructed at an altitude of 13,700 feet in West Kameng district on the road connecting Tezpur to Tawang at a cost of Rs 825 crore. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi in February 2019.
It may be noted that the Sela tunnel consists of two tunnels of length of 1003 m and 1595 m respectively. The 8.6 km approach and link road have been constructed at a cost of Rs 825 crore.
The second tunnel has a separate tunnel road near the main tunnel as per international policy. The escape tube built parallel to the main tube is connected to the main tunnel after every 500 metres.
In case of an emergency, this separate tunnel will be used to transport rescue vehicles and rescue the trapped persons. The tunnel has been constructed to ferry 3000 cars and 2000 trucks per day at a speed of 80 km per hour.
