18 Pakistanis have been given Indian citizenship. Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi on Saturday granted Indian citizenship to 18 Pakistani nationals at the office of the District Collector in Ahmedabad.
These people came from Pakistan and stayed in India many years ago. Along with this, 1,167 refugees settled in Gujarat have been granted citizenship in Ahmedabad district.
Granting citizenship to people from Pakistan, Sanghvi urged the refugees to work together to fulfil the dream of a New India.
“Today is an important day in your life. From today onwards you are a citizen of this great country. As a citizen, you will get all the rights and benefits of government schemes. I hope all of you will resolve to be a part of the development journey of the country.
However, granting citizenship to Pakistani refugees has nothing to do with the newly implemented Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). According to an official release, they were granted citizenship on the basis of gazette notifications of 2016 and 2018.
Both these notifications give the district commissioner in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Kutch districts of the state the right to grant Indian citizenship to minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
A few days ago, six Pakistani Hindu refugees got Indian citizenship for the first time after the caa was officially imposed in the country.
On Saturday, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jaipur in Rajasthan Shefali Kushwaha handed over the citizenship documents to six Hindu refugees who have been staying in Rajasthan for more than a decade.
Additional District Collector Shefali Kushwaha congratulated the migrants who have become Indian citizens and said that the applications for citizenship are being executed by the district administration on priority basis so that the applicants do not face any inconvenience. “A total of 319 eligible applicants have been granted Indian citizenship.
