Today is Maha Shivratri. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated every year on the chaturth dashi day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun. Since morning, countless devotees have thronged the temple to worship Maha Lord Shiva. Mahashivratri will start from 9.57pm on March 8 and end at 6.17pm on March 9.

Shivratri will be celebrated across the country today with various programmes throughout the day. On the occasion of Maha Shivaratri, shiva pujas are being organised in a grand manner in temples in different parts of the state including Sivdal in Sivasagar.

It is to be noted that according to the Hindu calendar, shivaratri tithi falls once on the thirteenth night/14th day of every month, but once in a year Maha Shivratri is organized with fanfare in Phalgun.

It is to be noted that according to some yogis, on the day of Shivaratri, Shiva saved the earth by drinking halahal. Maha Shivaratri is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana. These medieval texts have different legends associated with Shivaratri, but all mention fasting and showing respect for Shiva’s symbols such as linga.
