The historic Burhi Gosani Devalaya is situated to the east of Garhali in the middle of Jorhat city. Founded in 1708 by swargadeo Rudra Singha, the gosani vigraha was brought from the Jaintia king and was first set up at a place called Mitha Pukhuri in Jorhat. But later on this division was permanently established in its present place.
In 1708, when the Jaintia king Ramasingha defeated the Kachari king Tamradhwaj and refused to submit to the Ahom king, the Ahom swargadeva Rudrasimha attacked and defeated the Jaintia king. While suppressing the Kingdom of Jaintia, Swargadeva expressed his desire to bring the statue and vagina of Burhi Gosani, along with other tributaries of that kingdom, to Garhgaon.
At that time, the Jaintia royal family was shakta and the general public believed that Jaintia Gosani was awake. There were many diseases among the Ahom army when they wanted to bring Jayantaeshwari Devi to the Ahom kingdom. Then the Goddess appears to the Ahom commander in a dream and says that he will not leave that country and if the Ahoms want to take the idol, they can take the idol of Gosani in the ears of the burhi River.
After this dream, the Ahom commander brought an idol of the goddess from the bank of the Old River and gave it to Swargadeva. It is said that this part of the idol is known as ‘Budhigosani’ because it is brought from the banks of the Burhi River.
