The Congress has come under the ire of the ruling BJP after the Supreme Court termed the electoral bond system introduced by the BJP government as unconstitutional. A total of nine bank accounts were Frozen.
The opposition party alleged that as per the instructions of the BJP leadership, the Income Tax department had frozen the bank accounts of the Congress as well as the bank accounts of the Youth Congress. After this, the Congress protested against it and immediately approached the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and de-freezed a few more accounts.
It may be recalled that the Income Tax department had frozen the account of the Congress on Friday. After this, there were various reactions across the country. At a time when political parties are busy with the Lok Sabha elections in the country, only a few weeks are left before the election notification is issued, the issue of freezing the Congress’s account in this way assumes special significance.
It may be recalled that soon after the Congress account was frozen, party leader Vivek Tankha approached the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and the tribunal directed them to activate their accounts again. The tribunal will hear the matter next Wednesday.
On the other hand, party treasurer Ajay Maken said that the original bank account of the Congress has been frozen for general reasons. As a result, the work of the party has been hampered. Addressing a press conference here, he said that the accounts of the Congress, including the Indian Youth Congress, have been frozen for demanding income tax of Rs 210 crore in 2018-19.
He says he paid the income tax somewhat late that year. So the Income Tax Department has frozen the account in this way. A total of 4 accounts of the party have been frozen, he said at the press conference.
