In 2024, heat broke previous records, climate change is hurting farmers. The heat has touched 49 degrees Celsius in different parts of India

The amount of rain has decreased at an unprecedented rate. The upward level of heat is parallel to the decrease in rainfall. People of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Assam, Telangana and many other states of India have been affected by the scorching heat.

The amount of rainfall is decreasing day by day. This unusual change in weather is sending a warning signal to various states of India.

This phenomenon poses serious challenges to public health. The disturbing picture of climate change has brought terrible days to the lives of assam, which is rich in biodiversity. As a result, the people of Assam are in the heat of June-July in May.

Climate change has emerged as a burning issue in the 21st century. Due to global warming, the earth’s climate has changed drastically and the burden of all its negative effects has to be borne first by the environment.

At present, climate change is taking place at a rapid pace all over the world due to the destruction of the natural environment by humans, the emission of harmful gases in the atmosphere, pollution in the soil and river water.

Mainly due to man-made pollution, the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere is increasing rapidly.

Such an increase in temperature has started melting the ice caps of the North Pole and the sea level has increased alarmingly.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the amount of rainfall by year is as follows- -14 per cent in 2015, -3 per cent in 2016, -5 per cent in 2017, -9.80 per cent in 2018, 110 per cent in 2019, 109 per cent in 2020, 99 per cent in 2021, 106 per cent in 2021, 106 per cent in 2022

The rainfall for the 2023 season was lower than the long-term average (LPA) across the country as a whole (94% of LPA).

According to IMD data, the total rainfall in the country in August in 2023 was 160.4 mm, much below normal. Its normal figure is 241 mm.

According to statistics, the entire northeast region, including Assam, is witnessing a marked change in the climate for a few years now.

Rainfall and temperature records in the northeastern states show that the average rainfall in a year has come down to around 25 per cent.

In the Northeast, the surface temperature has risen at .11 degrees in a decade. Global warming has had more impact than environmental destruction in the Northeast.

Around 15 districts of Assam experienced severe drought in 2005 and 2006. It is to be noted that in 2006, the rainfall had decreased by about 40%.

In the past, several states have received rains, but the heat level has not subsided. Several people in the country have died due to the heat wave.

Extreme warming, excessive reduction in rainfall, etc. have disrupted normal life. Assam has witnessed an unusual drop in rainfall this year.

Under the influence of monsoon, Assam receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season; But the rainfall in the state has dropped abnormally this time as well.

The heat has gripped the people of the state due to the rise in the normal temperature. On the other hand, the amount of rain is also decreasing phenomenally.

Due to which the water level in the river is decreasing. But if you are questioned as to what is the root cause of this, then it can be seen that-

Climate Change

Climate change is one of the main drivers behind changes in rainfall patterns.

Due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels and destruction of forests, global warming disrupts the weather system.

Destruction of forests

Indiscriminate destruction of forests, digging of land for agricultural and urban works, cutting hills and destruction have reduced the amount of rainfall.

Vegetation, forests play an important role in the water cycle, rainfall occurs through evaporation and affects local weather patterns.

But its erosion disrupts this cycle, reducing the amount of rainfall in that particular area.

Air pollution

India’s growing industrialization and vehicular smoke contribute to air pollution, which has a greater impact on rainfall patterns.

Pollution can affect the formation of clouds and the process of rainfall, thereby reducing rainfall in the polluted areas.

Effect on heat or heat due to a decrease in rainfall

India’s heat crisis has become even more acute due to a drop in rainfall rates. The decrease in soil moisture due to the decrease in rainfall and evaporation contribute to higher surface temperatures.

The combination of decreased rainfall and warming poses serious challenges to agriculture, water resources and human health.

It is noteworthy that so far Assam has received 35 per cent less rainfall. Climate change has also negatively impacted the world famous tea industry in Assam.

Farmers fear a 50 per cent fall in tea production. Short spells of rain from time to time and temperate climate are very useful for tea cultivation.

But climate change has led to drought-like conditions due to lack of prolonged rainfall, just as there is heavy rainfall in a short period of time.

Both extreme drought or extreme rainfall are dangerous for tea cultivation. Heavy rainfall weakens the trees by causing erosion in the upper part of the soil.

During the prolonged drought season, various insects attack tea plants and hence more pesticides have to be applied.

Similarly, the rise in temperature and the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are harming the tea plants. These are the reasons why the quality of tea goes down.

If the climate change in Assam continues, one day tea may disappear from the bosom of Assam! Assam is an agrarian state. Climate change is also having a huge impact on the agriculture sector.

Since the farmers of Assam are completely dependent on the rains, there is a hue and cry in the agriculture sector if the amount of rainfall decreases.

Due to lack of rain water, farmers’ crops have dried up. Farmers in different parts of the country have started drying up paddy, jute cultivation as well as various rabi crops and vegetable crops due to lack of rain water.

These farmers, who have chosen farming as a source of livelihood, have put their hands on their foreheads.

No rain: Farmers in danger in Mankachar

The hot and drought situation has become complicated in Mankachar due to lack of rain for a long time.

The agricultural fields of farmers in the agrarian state of Mankasar are burning in the midst of the scorching sun.

Especially in Kanaimara gram panchayat, which borders Bangladesh, the farmers are struggling to put their hands on their foreheads as vegetable crops are on the verge of collapse.

Zahirul Haque, a farmer from Kanaimara, has started growing vegetables since last year. Last year, the farmers were benefitted by cultivating vegetables, but the farmer has suffered losses due to the burning of the fields in the heat this afternoon.

Most of the vegetable crops in Kanaimara gram panchayat are thus eroding this time amid drought and heat.

If there is no rain in the future, the vegetable crop will be damaged and the farmers will face losses and there will be a shortage of vegetables in Mankachar.

The farmers have demanded that the government give monetary as compensation to farmers who have been devastated during the drought.
